"You would think that such a win would generate immediate and enthusiastic support from top Democrats for Mamdani’s candidacy in a general election where he will face Republican Curtis Sliwa; Adams, the scandal-plagued incumbent who skipped the Democratic primary and is running on a newly created third-party line; and, potentially, a sore-loser third-party candidacy by Cuomo. Yes, Mamdani is a democratic socialist – like Sanders and US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Yes, he has taken bold, progressive stands on economic issues while advocating for international and domestic human rights. But, as the primary results illustrate, he’s also a very popular Democratic nominee for one of the highest-profile elected positions in the United States.

Despite that fact, Democratic congressional leaders who come from New York City, such as Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer and House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries, have yet to endorse Mamdani. Nor have other prominent New York Democrats, such as Governor Kathy Hochul and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand—though the latter did make Islamophobic remarks about Mamdani that she later apologized for. And some Democrats who represent suburban communities, such as US Representative Laura Gillen, have been outspoken in their criticism of a party nominee whom they disagree with on issues ranging from tax policy and US support for the Israeli assault on Gaza.

The reluctance of prominent Democrats to formally endorse the party’s nominee has led to complaints from progressives. “It’s time for every Democratic leader to get on board,” says New York Working Families Party codirector Jasmine Gripper. “The Mamdani tent is big enough for everyone. Any leader who is serious about building a base of energized voters and wins would be smart to join us.”"

Poland presses the EU to open a probe into Grok’s ‘erratic’ behaviour.

The Polish deputy prime minister says the ‘negative effects’ of Elon Musk’s AI chatbot may have been ‘by design.’

The AI chatbot came under fire for generating offensive responses that included glorifying Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, and “hoping” that wildfires in the south of France will clean up low-income neighbourhoods in Marseille.

"At a 2021 conference of the Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA), Zohran Mamdani discussed various short-term reforms favored by the organization. But alongside offering his thoughts on the groups’ immediate aims, he also had something to say about “end goal” of socialist politics: “seizing the means of production.”

In the last week, the clip resurfaced on right-wing social media, where it’s been treated as a damning discovery about Mamdani, who just won a primary to become the Democratic nominee for mayor in New York City.

National Review ran a brief item on the clip under the headline “Uh, That’s Literal Communism!” On CNN, Scott Jennings concurred, saying that Mamdani was “using the language of the Bolsheviks.” Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) said that this was “the scariest thing Mamdani has said” and that it was “straight out of Karl Marx’s Communist playbook.”

It’s unclear why these remarks about the end goal of socialist politics are supposed to be shocking. Days before this supposedly scandalous clip surfaced, when a CNN reporter asked Mamdani whether he “like[d] capitalism,” his response was a forthright “No, I have many critiques.”

And of course, Mamdani constantly called himself a “socialist” during the primary election in which he delivered a knockout blow against former governor Andrew Cuomo, defeating the former governor by 12 points in the final round.

A socialist advocating the socialization of the means of production should be exactly as surprising as a libertarian advocating “liberty” from economic redistribution or a conservative calling to conserve the status quo. This is socialism’s core defining proposition, and it is a mark of how alien many of the ideas of the Left are to the media class that Mamdani’s comments have come as a surprise."

jacobin.comRed-Baiting Zohran Mamdani Won’t WorkNo one should be surprised that Zohran Mamdani supports democratic control over the economy, the end goal of socialism. But he won because he combined socialist politics with practical solutions to the cost-of-living crisis facing working people.

These companies are not too big to fail, and they are certainly not too big to be regulated. If we are to see #DPI succeed, we need regulatory intervention.” — Mike Bracken

I really liked DSA ("Das Schwarze Auge") when I played the videogame, which has a gigantically crunchy system in it. Then the first US rulebook release, which was not quite complete or edited…

I kept meaning to get the new one, I have the quickstart, but didn't go full in.

Who knows when/if I'd run it, but that's never stopped me from hitting "IT MUST BE MINE!" before, and the full set's cheaper than one hardcover.
