A vacancy unexpectedly opened up at the start of the month when Adriana Kugler, a governor, announced that she was leaving before her term was set to expire at the end of January. #Trump tapped a longstanding critic of the #FederalReserve, Stephen Miran, who most recently served as chair of Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers.

Scrutiny of #corruption & judicial independence also is significantly scaled back in the draft report for #Israel. The 2023 report compiled by the #Biden admin addresses the corruption trial of Israeli PM #Netanyahu, another of #Trump’s international allies, ‘ judicial overhaul efforts, which critics say threatens the #independence of the country’s #judiciary. The Trump admin’s draft report for Israel makes no mention of corruption or threats to the independence of Israel’s judiciary.

#Trump has openly mused about whether to remove #JeromePowell before his tenure as chair ends, but he's held off on dismissing the #Fed chair after a recent #SCOTUS ruling suggested he could only do so for cause rather than out of policy disagreements. Trump has put pressure on Powell by claiming he mismanaged the Fed's $2.5 billion renovation project [& exaggerating its cost], but he's also said that he's "highly unlikely" to fire Powell.

"I think Kevin & Kevin, both Kevins, are very good," #Trump said during an interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box."

He said 2 other people were also under consideration, but Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is not among them.

"I love Scott, but he wants to stay where he is," Trump said. He did not name his other 2 top candidates but used the opportunity to disparage #JeromePowell, whom he has dubbed "too late" in cutting interest rates.

So I've just migrated all of my (admittedly entirely uninteresting) #GitHub repos to my own #Forgejo installation. I have no illusions that anyone will actually care about this move, but at least it removes one of the many pebbles in my stomach.

I did not need convincing that using and relying on centralised services run by large, non-European companies is bad; that has been clear for decades. Dependency, privacy concerns, legal implications and the general issue of "being the product" are all well-known and not-so-well-aged problems.

So what's new? Well that's easy: Most - or even all - the companies and services that fall under the umbrella loosely defined above have turned into outright Trump-apologists and bona fide supporters of fascism. Oh and they steal everyones stuff and feed it to their LLMs.

I should have done this a long time ago, and even so I'm keeping my presence on GitHub simply because it's pretty much a necessity to be able to contribute to other projects. And doing that is still more important than "sticking it to the guy": The positive impact of contributing (and maintaining a low bar for me to do so) still seems too important to outright deleting me account.

I'm willing to hear arguments to the contrary, though. #SelfHosting #Independence #EU #DigitalFreedom #OnlineFreedom

…Trump’s impact on the #media landscape has been profound. He has also gone after US government media that had #independence charters, including the venerable #VoiceOfAmerica, ending that media outlet’s operations after many decades.

Trump also fired 3 members of the #CPB board of directors in April. In legal action at the time, the fired directors said their dismissal was governmental overreach targeting an entity whose charter guarantees it independence.

#Ukraine adopts new anti-#corruption #law

Ukraine’s parliament approved #legislation Thurs restoring the #independence of the country’s 2 main government anti-corruption bodies—a move demanded by Kyiv’s international partners as well as tens of thousands of Ukrainians who protested on the streets of the capital & other cities.

The legislation passed by a comfortable margin, with 331 deputies voting in favor; a majority of 226 was needed.

The Washington Post · Ukraine adopts new anti-corruption law as protests force Zelensky to retreatBy David L. Stern

Today in Labor History July 29, 1848: The police put down the Tipperary Revolt against British rule. The Young Ireland movement led this nationalist rebellion, which was part of a wave of European revolutions that occurred that year. Because the revolt occurred in the wake of the Great Famine, and the Irish were still suffering from hunger and poverty, it is also sometimes called the Famine Rebellion. During the revolt, the rebels chased an Irish Constabulary into the Widow McCormack’s house in Ballingarry, South Tipperary, where they took her children hostage. She demanded to be let in, but the cops refused. Rebel leaders tried negotiating with the cops, so that no one would get hurt. “We’re all Irishmen,” they said. “Put down your guns and you’re free to go.” However, the cops began firing and a gunfight ensued, lasting hours, until a large group of police reinforcements chased the rebels off. The authorities later arrested many of the leaders and sent them to the penal colony in Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania).

In my first novel, “Anywhere But Schuylkill,” my main character’s mother is brought to America in 1848 by her family, who were fleeing deportation to Van Diemen’s Land for their role in the uprising.

“This came from us?” #JeromePowell said, then figuring out that #Trump was including the renovation of the Martin Building that was finished 5 years ago.

“Do you expect any more additional cost overruns?” Trump asked.

“Don’t expect them,” Powell said.

Trump said in his career as a real estate developer he would fire someone for cost overruns. The president joked that he would back off Powell if he lowered interest rates.
