I just got the perfect opportunity to test my new Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM and I couldn't be any more satisfied. This hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) wasn't alone, in fact there was a second one, and so far has only been observed feeding on lavender and the much-hated butterfly-bush.

Not great numbers last night despite the mild, still conditions. Today's #MothOfTheDay is another of the comically distinctive wood mimics.

Common in the UK south and larvae feed on poplars and sallows.

Not one we are familiar with at all #moth experts - possibly noctuid Heliothis viriplaca, the Marbled Clover?
