"The Perseids are coming — here's how to watch the glorious meteor shower before the moon ruins the show" by @LiveScience - Perseids meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12-13. But the #Moon just past full will rise around 10pm local time, washing out the sky for all but the brightest meteors. livescience.com/space/meteoroi #Perseids2025 #Perseids #MeteorShower #astronomy #LowFlyingRocks

Live Science · The Perseids are coming — here's how to watch the glorious meteor shower before the moon ruins the showBy Jamie Carter
Last August I saw the most incredible Northern Lights I've ever seen (I've only seen them a few times since I live in the Southern Finland). The entire sky was covered with intense green lights and sudden flashes of red and purple. It was such a divine cosmic sight it was almost terrifying.

These pictures are from the last % of the show because I didn't want to miss the most intense part getting my camera. I even managed to capture one of the Perseids in the second picture.

Surprise ... global radio echo (jpn.iprmo.org/post/flash/2024-) and video (globalmeteornetwork.org/flux/p) data agree that there were TWO major maxima of the #Perseids 2024, with the bigger one on August 13 - which was not predicted in imo.net/files/meteor-shower/ca (page 12). What was *that*? The collected isual data (imo.net/members/imo_live_showe - go to "Peak") have large gaps in coverage and are inconclusive IMHO, as they show one broad maximum at best and don't resolve the two sharp peaks radio and video have seen.

Milky Aurora Shower

This composite was taken during the Perseid shower, which coincided with a spectacular auroral display. The aurora and foreground are from one photo and the Milky Way was stacked from many images of the same series using #Siril. 12 (barely visible) meteorites, that were photographed in the same scene, were (roughly) registered onto the composite. Compositing was done in #GIMP, RAW processing of the aurora and the meteorites was done in #Darktable.

The greatest challenge was compositing the aurora on top of the stacked Milky Way. During the stacking process, the auroras were also stacked, resulting in a combined auroral glow that was much larger than the aurora of the single image I had chosen.

Timelapse from last night, when I was trying to catch the Perseids meteor shower. There is only one meteor visible in the video, the rest is light pollution and satellites.

The Andromeda Galaxy and the Alpha Persei Cluster are among the main deep space objects visible in the timelapse.
