if the point of social media was just to talk to others, we have many other ways to do that. if it was to post publicly, we have blogs etc. and we can message people links to sites with a note, then talk about it.
what's special is the virality. and making it decentralized means no third party has final say on that virality. the public decides what's popular. what needs to be seen.
it's the power of mass media but put in the control of the public. revolutionary.
Mainstream culture and news being fully non corporate and ad free. That's my dream. I think everybody on fedi with it tied into everything, along with a way for everybody to auto pay for media what they do now but instead directly to creators based on time spent with their work, is how we get there. #DemocracyOfReach #SocialWeb
This week, #JonStewart focused the show on the parent company of his network folding to pressure from Trump. That can't be going over well. He ended his last show on Apple TV because they pushed back on his wanting to do episodes about #Israel #China and AI.
I dream of everything indie tech/media being in place so that he could run something as well done as #TheDailyShow on his own website, with no ads or corporate oversight. Then we can say we made it.
I wish Reason would embrace decentralized social media. it's a very libertarian idea, like the open web. they could run their own fedi server for all their staff, just like they have their own website and email servers. or at least do an article about it and explain that it's the way to go but that the audience just isn't there yet to justify the expense for the org. same with FIRE. it's the best way to protect free speech via social media. #SocialWeb

What explains people with accounts on both #threads and #bluesky but where only the former is federated? I think some people have given up on threads and only use bluesky and bridge that here, but I don't think anyone is still active on both and only bridges from bluesky. #SocialWeb
Great article but it misses one key point. Arguing that before social media, Americans could largely separate ourselves by politics/culture, doesn't account for legacy/mainstream/establishment/corporate media. Nobody has been able to escape their framing of reality for a century. Like water to a fish, I get how people comfortable with their biases don't even recognize this problem. The rest of us want to be able to push back.

You could say there was a cult around Obama too, but when Dems had both chambers in 2009 by a larger margin than the GOP does now, we were told they couldn't try to pass universal health care cause it would splinter the party and most said "of course".
The key in politics is the narrative. It supersedes partisanship and ideology. And wealthy control over the narrative will only end with media decentralization. Getting everybody on fedi and fedi into everything is how we do that. #SocialWeb

Derzeit kursieren wieder Meldungen, dass diesmal bei Facebook Organisationen ihre Business-Pages verlieren. Offenbar passen deren Inhalte Mark Zuckerberg nicht mehr ins Konzept. Website-Betreiber berichten, dass ihr Traffic von Google zusammenbricht. Die ehemalige Suchmaschine lässt stattdessen ihre KI fantasieren.
