New server, new #introduction:

👋 Hi! I'm Eric! I'm a scientific programmer & educator who writes mostly :rstats: code. I currently work part time at #UniversityOfArizona where I help researchers by making R packages, #Shiny apps, automated data workflows, and training them on #ReproducibleResearch practices. I also mentor data scientists for @Posit Academy. I am #OpenToWork as a contractor if any of those skills sound useful to you.

My background is in plant chemical ecology and population ecology and for my PhD I studied #tea and did field work in China. I love tea (although I've been drinking coffee more and more lately) and practice #GongFuCha when I can. I love #foraging and tasting new things.

I currently live in #Tucson but the #BayArea will always be my home.

💧🧬 Did you know that key drug targets in your body, the G-protein–coupled receptors (GPCRs), need a massive influx of water to activate, even more than their size? Fried et al. found this and more in a study that can change the future of drug design. Check out their dataset and article at doi.org/10.25422/azu.data.1968 and doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2117349119. Speaking about the University of Arizona, home of #HiRISE, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment in Mars orbit:

"We believe that HiRISE is an intersection between science and culture. We often post lines of poetry, aphorisms and literary quotations in different languages […] paired with an image that is meant to show that Mars can also be a place of inspiration and reflection."

A video from my university about how research training affects students. I love that 2 of the 3 students who are showcased are women of color, one of them a Navajo student who talks about her son saying "my mom's a scientist!", and about the impact of the research on safe water for her community. #AcademicChatter #Tucson #Arizona #UniversityOfArizona youtube.com/watch?v=RyqEtfZ39k

This article is by our new university president and the leader of the central office for research. Universities do good work that is helpful to society, and that shouldn't be news. Society (taxes and federal granting agencies) should support universities, for the research outcomes as well as the education for students, and those two happen together. #AcademicChatter #Tucson #UniversityOfArizona #Arizona azcentral.com/story/opinion/op

I got some unfortunate news earlier this month: #UniversityOfArizona has decided to defund the group I work for, @cct-datascience.bsky.social, amidst their continuing budget crisis.

datascience.cct.arizona.edu/ne

It super sucks and means I'll likely have to drop down to 50% in May and I'll be looking for new, better supported, #rseng or #datascience positions, ideally still working with biologists in #rstats in some capacity. Remote or in #Tucson.

Let me know if you know of anything!

The University of Arizona unveiled a new sign for the Center for Creative Photography today with Chemehuevi language included. I'm proud of the university for adding indigenous languages to university building signs, and for working well with the tribes to do this. The Senior Vice President who has taken charge of this project, Levi Esquerra, is Chemehuevi, making this sign especially meaningful. #Tucson #UniversityOfArizona #IndigenousLanguages

I'm so proud of my academic department (Linguistics at University of Arizona). We run a table at the Tucson Festival of Books, in the Science City portion, where we get lots and lots of members of the general public of all ages involved in hands-on activities about language. We use ultrasound to show them how their tongues move while they talk, which got reactions like freaky! awesome! weird! cool! We also did an activity about what language family your family's/ancestor's language fits into, which was a huge hit. I twisted a whole lot of arms last week to get enough volunteers to staff the table (and did eventually succeed), and I'm so proud of our department for putting the effort in to do public outreach about science this way. #linguistics #Tucson #UniversityOfArizona #AcademicChatter
