#Signal Chief Meredith Whittaker Sounds Alarm On Agentic A.I.’s Privacy Threat

..says agentic A.I. could compromise platforms like Signal by bypassing app-layer privacy protections

As head of the non-profit foundation overseeing Signal, the messaging service known for its #E2E encryption, is always on the lookout for emerging security risks. Right now, she’s particularly concerned about agentic #AI, which she warned could reach “a very dangerous juncture”

Observer · Signal Chief Meredith Whittaker Sounds Alarm On Agentic A.I.’s Privacy ThreatBy Alexandra Tremayne-Pengelly

"There is no “cloud,” just someone else's computer—and when the cops come knocking on their door, these hosts need to be willing to stand up for privacy, and know how to do so to the fullest extent under the law. These legal limits are also important for users to know, not only to mitigate risks in their security plan when choosing where to share data, but to understand whether these hosts are going to bat for them. Taking action together, service hosts and users can curb law enforcement getting more data than they’re allowed, protecting not just themselves but targeted populations, present and future.

This is distinct from law enforcement’s methods of collecting public data, such as the information now being collected on student visa applicants. Cops may use social media monitoring tools and sock puppet accounts to collect what you share publicly, or even within “private” communities. Police may also obtain the contents of communication in other ways that do not require court authorization, such as monitoring network traffic passively to catch metadata and possibly using advanced tools to partially reveal encrypted information. They can even outright buy information from online data brokers. Unfortunately there are few restrictions or oversight for these practices—something EFF is fighting to change.

Below however is a general breakdown of the legal processes used by US law enforcement for accessing private data, and what categories of private data these processes can disclose. Because this is a generalized summary, it is neither exhaustive nor should be considered legal advice. Please seek legal help if you have specific data privacy and security needs."

WA ⇨ Signal ⇨ Jabber ⇨ DeltaChat ⇨ Session ⇨ Jami ⇨ Chat over #I2P ⇨ Chat over Freenet

@martv @nixCraft WhatsApp is end-to-end encrypted now, but probably won't stay that way.

Out of all the currently #e2e encrypted services, #WhatsApp is rated most likely to start providing access to the government, which means an architecture change is coming manifold.markets/DonMarti7bd2/

(It looks like Meta management considers their position on the AI benchmark leaderboard and their connections with the Trump Administration as more important than this one point of software design)

ManifoldWill Meta provide the content of a WhatsApp message to US law enforcement before January 20, 2029?57% chance. Background: WhatsApp, owned by Meta, currently uses end-to-end encryption for all messages, meaning only the sender and recipient can read message contents. While WhatsApp can and does share certain metadata with law enforcement, they cannot access the actual content of encrypted messages in the current version of the Whatsapp software. Resolution Criteria This market will resolve YES if, before January 20, 2029, one of the listed Internet news sites reports that Meta has provided the content of at least one WhatsApp message to a US law enforcement agency. "Content" refers to the actual text, images, videos, or other media sent in messages, not to metadata such as user names, IP addresses, or timestamps. Internet news sites: 404 Media, Ars Technica, Business Insider, The Markup, ProPublica, The Register, TechCrunch, The Verge.

@ente So glad I found your photo service.

I completed my #GooglePhotos #Takeout and have upload my entire #Photography library to ente.io. Used delete duplicates to clean up my collection. I found the facial recognition to be very accurate. Object recognition quite good too.

If you are looking for a secure, #e2e private cloud storage service for your #SilentSunday and other #photos that is not #Google, I'd suggest giving #Ente a try!
