A fascinating preprint investigating the 'mechanical morphogenesis' -- the complex shapes generated by growth and expansion of #brains. This compares 70 species of New World vs Old World #monkeys. As Katja Heuer @k4tj4 asks: 'To predict the behaviour of a primate, would you rather base your guess on a closely related species or one with a similar brain shape?'

Complex shape figures as a 3rd major factor along with genetic inheritance and experience.

A Late #Devonian coelacanth reconfigures actinistian #phylogeny, disparity, and evolutionary dynamics: Alice Clement et al. nature.com/articles/s41467-024

"The discovery of an exceptionally well preserved ancient primitive Devonian #coelacanth fish in remote Western #Australia has been linked to a period of heightened tectonic activity, or movement in the Earth's crust"

One of the more common aquatic plants in the coastal Amazon region is Apalanthe granatensis (Bonpl.) Planch. (Hydrocharitaceae). The species is put in genus Elodea by some, but several phylogenetic studies indicate that Elodea (without Apalanthe) is sister to species of genus Egeria, so the monotypic Apalanthe should probably be maintained in separate – or all three genera should be united in one, single genus.
