I’m Dr. Velvet Fingers, Chief Linguist at Gollyudeaf University. I’m thrilled to announce that we’ve teamed up with… God. Yes, that God. To create a brand-new, official ASL name sign. This was a long, harrowing journey— Eight months of linguistic research, International community feedback, And… accidentally starting a religious war. We consulted Catholics, Baptists, Orthodox Jews, Evangelicals, Several witches, two Mormon Deaf elders, A Satanist in Ohio, And one guy on TikTok who insists he is God. [Pause.] With the world on fire… I couldn’t help but wonder: Is this really the best way to spend our time and power? Anyway! Ready for the sign? [Points upward.] [Beat.] That’s it. That’s the sign. @technotim I noticed you’re adding a signed “Thank you” to your spoken one when closing your videos for some time now.
Just out of curiosity: Are you learning/using #ASL or any other sign-language?

Context: I’ve been learning and using #ÖGS (Austrian Sign Language, aka. Österreichische Gebärdensprache) for a few years now.

From the article: "For years, White House press conferences included sign language interpreters for the deaf.

"No longer. Interpreters have been noticeably absent from Trump administration press briefings, advocacy groups say. Gone, too, are the American Sign Language interpretations that used to appear on the White House’s YouTube channel. A White House webpage on accessibility, whitehouse.gov/accessibility, has also ceased working.

"From halting diversity programs that benefit people with disabilities to staffing cuts at the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Trump administration has taken a slew of actions that harm those with impairments or chronic health conditions. Decades of hard-fought gains risk being undone by cuts to federal programs, freezes on research funding, and a White House ban on practices that support diversity."

Tein aiemmion kyselyn tästä emojista/käsimerkistä (🤟).
Halusin nähdä kuinka ihmiset tulkitsevat tai tietävät ennestään kyseisen käsimerkin tarkoituksen. Äänestystuloksen perusteella 14% äänestäjistä tiesi käsimerkin alkuperäisen merkityksen.

Kyseessä on hyvin vanha käsimerkki. Merkin tarkoitus on ilmaista "I love you" tai "love you". Sanojen ensimmäiset alkukirjaimet sormitetaan samanaikaisesti sormiaakkosina eli I, L ja Y.

Käsimerkin historia on pitkä, se ulottuu 1900-luvun tienoolle ja on tullut alkujaan amerikkalaisesta viittomakielestä. Kyseinen käsimerkki on levinnyt viime vuosikymmeninä sosiaalisen median kautta laajasti yleiseen käyttöön ympäri maailmaa. Tätä käytetään myös täällä meillä Suomessakin viittomakielisten kesken.

Fascinating #keynote by Rob Koch at #KubeCon on real-time Sign Language interpretation.

He "talked" in sign language (American Sign Language, ASL), which was real-time translated to both speech and closed captioning. And also to British Sign Language, which uses entirely different gestures. Wow!

And of course, the topic.was on how to automatically recognize sign language. And the challenges involved.

Wait for the recording!

New #introduction post!

I'm Alicia and I'm a fibre artist (#dyeing #handspinning #felting #needlefelting #weaving #crochet #embroidery #upcycling #sewing) with interests in #mandala #art #psychedelicart #sacredgeometry #neurographicart and #watercolors.

My family and I run a business called @Fibre2Fabric where we dye all sorts of exotic #fibre #yarn, and #fabric.

I live in the country with my partner and our 6 #cats, 3 #dogs, #snake and #crestedgecko where I enjoy my many interests. (#gardening #plants #herbalism #fungi #music #ukulele #piano #dancing #flowart #reading #writing #tarot #poetry #haiku #cozygames and I'm getting more into #opensource / #linux)

When I say flow art, I mean spinning props like #hulahoop #leviwand #puppyhammer #poi #staff #silkfans #firefans etc.

I love #languagelearning. I studied #German and #Spanish as a kid, took #Japanese in uni, and I'm currently studying #ASL #Cree #Tokipona #Spanish and #Chinese. I also dabble in #French and #Latin sometimes and I'm learning #Greggshorthand to write faster. Cree is my favourite language and Spanish is my second.

I've been cursed since childhood with that lovely trifecta of #heds #pots and #mcas. Healing slowly but surely.

Hope I get to meet even more cool people the algorithms would normally drown out on other social media sites. I love it here!

#ASL question: the signs I'm seeing for "god" all seem imply the cross to me, some people do it like a cross being raised, and some like part of a catholic crossing themselves. Am I reading into that?

If not… what about Hindu gods? Praying to Ganesha "You are the god who's watched over me this whole journey."

And what about plurality like "Gods I love this" ? Referring to a pantheon like that seems extra effed up if you're pluralizing a Jehova / Jesus based sign.

So, I've been hyperfixating on #ASL lately, idk if I'd feel up to joining one, but I've been wondering if there are any regular jitsi (or other floss vidchat service) chat groups for people to practice sign.

Anybody know of one?
