Recreating sea silk fabric from another clam.

"[T]he silk [...] comes from the beardlike tufts of the giant clam Pinna nobilis. But the clam’s endangered species status has made it hard to keep the tradition alive.

Now, scientists have re-created the legendary fabric using discarded parts of Atrina pectinata, a related clam species farmed extensively in South Korea for food."

Ancient golden #silk revived from the Korean sea
#SeaSilk—often referred to as the “golden fiber of the sea”—was one of the most prized materials in the ancient #Roman period, used exclusively by figures of high authority such as emperors and popes. This precious fiber is made from the #byssus threads secreted by #PinnaNobilis, a large #clam native to the #Mediterranean,

After hosting the #Fabricademy #bootcamp 2025 at @greenfabric we are already preparing next Fabricademy 6-months course starting in September! This programme mixes #textile, #digitalfabrication and #biology

Running from mid-September till end of March, it is led by international experts in many different fields: #biomaterials, #opensource #hardware, #naturaldye, #softrobotics, #etextile, #digitalbodies, #textilescaffolds… It gathers students all around the world through international nodes (#Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, France, Armenia, Jordan, Rwanda, Mexico, Japan…).

It is not structurally subsidized but Green Fabric, the Belgian node, offers 2 full-scolarships per year (for 3 years) with the support of Feder and Brussels Fablab Network. This scolarship covers the 8000$ subscription fees and you'll have access to our textile #fablab during the programme.
I will be the local instructor in Brussels.

Please spread the word to people you think might be interested to follow this one-of-a-kind course!

Humabiologics launches affordable human collagen, breaking funding barriers for scientific research and enabling more precise regenerative medicine studies. Ethically sourced, clinically relevant biomaterials now within reach for researchers worldwide. #Biomaterials #Research

We are proud to share that a research team led by @EPFL professor Li Tang, head of the Lab of #Biomaterials for #Immunoengineering, has received the prestigious Fondation Leenaards prize 2025!

The goal of team's work is to increase the stiffness of #cancer-cell membranes, making it easier for patients’ T-cells to attack and destroy tumors. Their approach could lead to more effective treatments for patients who are resistant to existing #immunotherapy.

#Fabricademy bootcamp 2025
May 19→25

Don't miss this year's bootcamp in Brussels to encounter international fellows in the field of #textile, #engineering and #biology.

I am co-organizing it through the #fablab @GreenFabric and the #fabricademy team (@fabtextiles ).

A great opportunity to test Fabricademy themes and way of working through intense hands-on workshops. It will cover #biomaterials with #mycelium #fungi, #modulardesign, #machineknitting with the #kniterate machine, using the #opensourcehardware machines that we built, #etextile with thermochromic inks.

Don't miss also the #MakerFaire on the following week-end (May 26-27) with the Fabricademy exhibition of final projects and a workshop on #softrobotics.

Boosts are more than welcome!
