The #State Dept began firing >1,350 #US based employees Friday as the #Trump admin goes ahead with an unprecedented overhaul of its #DiplomaticCorps, undermining US ability to defend & promote interests abroad.

The #layoffs, which affect 1,107 #CivilService & 246 #ForeignService officers in the US, come as the US faces multiple global #crises: #Russia's war in #Ukraine, the #Gaza conflict, & the #MiddleEast on edge due to tensions between #Israel & #Iran.

The terminations marked yet another escalation of norm-shattering moves raising alarm over the #Trump admin’s disregard for #CivilService protections for #career #lawyers & the erosion of the #DOJ’s #independence from the White House. Top *leaders* [thugs] at the Justice Dept have also fired employees who worked on the prosecutions against Trump & demoted a slew of career supervisors in what has been seen as an effort to #purge the agency of lawyers seen as insufficiently loyal [& #law abiding].

from Don Moynihan

"Take the time you would have spent complaining about politics online, or rubbernecking the Musk/Trump bunfight, and use it to write a comment opposing the proposed Office of Personnel Management rule to politicize public services. You can do it in 5 minutes. Deadline is midnight on June 7! (So tomorrow, Saturday is the last day)."

Can We Still Govern? · Last chance to weigh in on Trump's plan to politicize the civil serviceBy Don Moynihan

In a letter sent on Thurs to employees who had been fired, the #Trump admin cited “the government’s convenience” as a reason for the terminations. The employees were under so-called personal services contracts, making them easier to let go than regular full-time employees with full #CivilService protections.

Does shifting civil servants out of London help alleviate London-centrism in the UK's governance?

Labour will move another 12,000 jobs out, following the 18,000 moved by the Tories, but perhaps the bigger issue is whether moving civil servants out of London also moves London out of civil servants' mind-set?

Eventually this cultural shift may help shift perceptions in the civil service, but its a long-term project.... and won't be effective if they just commute!

Major structural changes to #State would be accompanied by #layoffs of both career #diplomats, known as foreign service officers, & #CivilService employees, who usually work in the dept’s HQ in DC…. The dept would begin putting large numbers of workers on paid leave & sending out notices of termination….

The draft #Trump EO calls for ending the foreign service exam for aspiring diplomats, & it lays out new criteria for hiring, including “alignment with the president’s foreign policy vision.”

President #Biden rescinded the order after he took office, but after taking office again in Jan, #Trump signed a new EO reinstating & renaming it.

Trump & his allies laid the groundwork for a new admin stocked w/ #loyalists. #ScheduleF was a significant part of that plan.

Many of the Trump allies who pushed for Schedule F now have key roles in the admin, including Dpty Chief of Staff #StephenMiller & #OMB Dir #RussVought.

Such #CivilServants in #nonpartisan roles traditionally have had #JobProtections that shielded them from the political whims of whoever was in the White House.

But #Trump & many of his backers have long believed the #ConspiracyTheories that a "deep state" of Washington bureaucrats was undercutting his agenda.

Toward the end of his first term, Trump signed an EO establishing a #ScheduleF category for federal employees.

The #Trump admin on Friday will announce that it's moving ahead with a new rule, previously known as "#ScheduleF," that will make it easier to remove federal employees it believes are undercutting Trump's agenda.

By stripping #CivilService protections from about 50k people — roughly 2% of the federal work force — Trump is continuing his far-reaching effort to *trim the federal bureaucracy* & make it more answerable to him.

Axios · Scoop: Trump revamps "Schedule F," making it easier to cut federal workersBy Alex Isenstadt

"This is not an anti-Trump protest. … This is not about an individual. This is about an idea that we need to take care of our service members, people who fought for this country and just want to keep serving this country and have access to the benefits that they are owed,"

Well pardon me, but that is a pathetic failure to meet the moment because you wouldn't have to march at all if Trump wasn't forcing a dictatorship with the destructive regime change efforts of his biggest campaign donor directly attacking the very veterans and civil servants you say this is about. If you had made it about the actual moment we're in, I'd have made the effort.

We served with the explicit understanding that America once freed itself from a despot and our entire foundation of government and civil society was built on the idea of avoiding exactly ALL THIS SHIT in the future. The founders didn't come up with an unbreakable system, that's painfully obvious. Once Congress gets unfucked by voters who we hope will finally figure out their mistakes, the U.S. could use this moment to legislatively patch the parts Trump has managed to break. March for THAT! 🤬 #veterans #military #CivilService

>2 centuries later, the system…has comprehensively failed. The people & institutions that are supposed to check #ExecutivePower are refusing to restrain #Trump. We now have a de facto #tyrant who thinks he can bend reality to his will w/o taking any facts or evidence into consideration, & w/o listening to any contrary views. Although the economic damage…is easier to measure, he has inflicted the same level of harm to #scientific #research, #CivilLiberties, #healthcare, & the #CivilService.
