Does the UK need a leftwing party to represent the views and needs of working people? Absolutely.

Do we need to work together rather than in individual silos to demand progressive reforms? Absolutely.

Will it need an ego to get it off the ground? Very likely.

Yes, we also need to see some choreography from #Sultana and #Corbyn, but also less ageism and misogyny from the media.

The Guardian · Zarah Sultana launches fundraising drive for new leftwing partyBy Aletha Adu

Politico tries to clarify the Zarah Sultana story:

"We hear there are indeed talks about bringing 200-odd councilors from different independent groupings under a single left-wing banner, with the aim of having something ready for the May 2026 elections. Corbyn is closely involved."

But Sultana seems to have jumped the gun last night: "While talks have reached a fairly advanced stage … they were not in a position to actually announce a new party."

"Corbyn confirmed on Friday that a new party is in the works after MP Zarah Sultana announced her intention to co-lead the founding of a new party with the pro-Palestine MP, as well as announcing her exit from the governing Labour Party"
Zarah Sultana: "The truth is clear: this government is an active participant in genocide. And the British people oppose it,"
Poverty, inequality and foreign policy are the main concerns.

I want a new party. I want a new movement. I want to see real change. I think Corbyn and Sultana both have key roles to play in that change.

But they’re not leaders. I mean, maybe she can be in future. But we need a unifying force and that means not just having principles. It also takes charisma, strong organisational skills, and excellent PR.

This isn’t it.

Zarah Sultana is similar. Great policies. Love to see her stand by her principles. I have tremendous respect for her.

But…

This launch is reminding me of the absolute disaster that was Change UK. Remember them? No, me neither. I literally had to search for ‘former Tory Anna’ because that was all I could remember.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know my feelings on Corbyn are complex. He stands for a lot of good things … but his approach to Brexit was unhelpful to say the least. His leadership was pure chaos. He brought in good policies and yet his focus on political purity meant none of them were ever implemented. He was great at getting young people interested in politics and terrible as a leader.
