A quotation from Herbert Hoover

The great liability of the engineer compared to men of other professions is that his works are out in the open where all can see them. His acts, step by step, are in hard substance. He cannot bury his mistakes in the grave like the doctors. He cannot argue them into thin air or blame the judge like the lawyers. He cannot, like the architects, cover his failures with trees and vines. He cannot, like the politicians, screen his shortcomings by blaming his opponents and hope that the people will forget. The engineer simply cannot deny that he did it. If his works do not work, he is damned.

Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) American engineer, bureaucrat, President of the US (1928-32)
Memoirs: Years of Adventure, 1874–1920, ch. 11 “The Profession of Engineering” (1952)

A quotation from Horace

Now listen while I show you, how the rest
Who call you madman, are themselves possessed.
Just as in woods, when travellers step aside
From the true path for want of some good guide,
This to the right, that to the left hand strays,
And all are wrong, but wrong in different ways,
So, though you’re mad, yet he who banters you
Is not more wise, but wears his pigtail too.

                    [Nunc accipe, quare
insano posuere. Velut silvis, ubi passim
palantis error certo de tramite pellit,
ille sinistrorsum, hic dextrorsum abit, unus utrique
error, sed variis inludit partibus: hoc te
crede modo insanum, nihilo ut sapientior ille
qui te deridet caudam trahat.]

Horace (65-8 BC) Roman poet, satirist, soldier, politician [Quintus Horatius Flaccus]

fixed two failure modes in #Fraktaler3 for #FractalFriday (thanks to FractalLion for bug report).

Previously:

- if saving TOML failed, program exited abruptly with uncaught exception

- if saving EXR, PNG, or JPG failed, program would continue without reporting the error - this could lead to calculation of a whole zoom out sequence with nothing to show for it (arguably worse than the crash)

Now:

- if saving fails, a modal dialog box is shown which blocks everything until Ok is clicked (and batch rendering is aborted if it was in progress)

A quotation from Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Cumulative errors depend largely on the big surprises, the big opportunities. Not only do economic, financial, and political predictors miss them, but they are quite ashamed to say anything outlandish to their clients — and yet events, it turns out, are almost always outlandish.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb (b. 1960) Lebanese-American essayist, statistician, risk analyst, aphorist
The Black Swan, Part 2, ch. 10 “The Scandal of Prediction” (2007)
