I'm sure I'm very late to this party, but SponsorBlock for YouTube is *amazing*. YouTube just has no ads for me any more. At all. (If I watch on my laptop.)

Firefox has crossed to the dark side.
"You guessed it: looks like it's a so-called AI."
"People are noticing Firefox gobbling extra CPU and electricity, apparently caused by an 'inference engine' built into recent versions of Firefox."
The Register: Some users report their Firefox browser is scoffing CPU power https://www.theregister.com/2025/08/13/firefox_ai_scoffing_power/ @theregister @lproven #Firefox #Mozilla #AI
Does anyone who uses #Firefox know how I can open new tabs RIGHT BESIDE the one I'm currently in, rather than way down at the end of the line of open tabs?
I'm often using FF in a tab that's to the left of newer tabs open. But if I then open something newer, it's usually to refer to at the moment, or something I want to check out soon, without having to scroll to the end of the tabs to get to.
I know I can then pull the tab back over right beside the currently live one, but I'm just hoping to somehow make this a default instead of needing to manually shift stuff around all the time.
(And yes, I know I shouldn't have a lot of tabs open all the time anyway... I'm getting better but clearly still need to work on it...)
The Joy of Coding returns today with Episode 413! Come join me while I #livehack on #firefox !
Today I'm going to try to write a utility for generating the various bits and pieces of JSON for deploying an out-of-band newtab update. I might also file a bunch of bugs and write some documentation. Or maybe review some patches! We'll see.
Starts at 1PM ET. All are welcome!
gHacks: Firefox users say that Smart Tab Grouping is using too much CPU, battery. “Mozilla released Firefox 141 last month, and with it came an AI-powered feature to organize tabs. Now, Firefox users are saying that the feature is causing high CPU usage.”
@jackbrewster one workaround is #Fennec (a #Firefox build): on mobile, it has a 'desktop site' toggle.
But yeah, fukk'em.
This post also provides instructions to turn off the new AI features of Firefox.

Nutzer des #Firefox 141 klagen über stark erhöhte CPU-Last und verkürzte Akkulaufzeit. Neue KI-Funktionen sollen schuld sein. Mozilla reagiert. https://winfuture.de/news,152904.html?utm_source=Mastodon&utm_medium=ManualStatus&utm_campaign=SocialMedia

Perplexity will Googles Browser übernehmen - trotz begrenzter Finanzmittel.«

#AskMastodon #Vivaldi browser, is it possible to move workspaces selector into the left hand pane and have them listed there a la #Firefox?
I have been using the #ZenBrowser for several months now, and I have to say it is very nice.
It does things a bit differently, so it took a while to get used to it, but after I got over the hump I've enjoyed using it. This is most evident in the left-side panel that has the URL bar, tabs, and everything else, which hides away automatically in Compact mode. I love it.
It is based on #Firefox, so it's not contributing to the #Chromium takeover. Also, it has its very specific Firefox quirks.
If you use Firefox and value your PC battery life, go to your settings, general, then under the "Tabs" subgroup, disable the option "Use AI to suggest tabs and a name for tab groups". This was on by default for me on two machines so far and apparently uses a local AI model on your machine to operate, which can negatively impact your battery on mobile devices.

Powered by a local AI model, these groups identify related tabs and suggest names for them. There is even a "Suggest more tabs for group" button that users can click to get recommendations.
Now, several users have taken to the #Firefox subreddit to complain about high CPU usage when using the feature, as well as express their disappointment in Mozilla for adding AI to the browser.
