From Shelter to Side Hustles – Profit Took Over Our Lives
What happens to life when basic needs, like housing, becomes an investment vehicle? How does you life change when the joy of watching sports is tied up with the idolization of gambling? What do we do with our leisure time when so much of the push around us asks us to monetize

Floating an exploratory ballon here. If #turtleBower needed to raise $30-$50k for a deposit on this current building, would you kick in? It's based in Ontario Canada, but if we pull this off it can be a template for other housing all over the world.

I am so honored and thrilled to be endorsed by #somerville YIMBY in this race. As folks know, #Housing and #transit are at the top of my policy priority list. I want to make it easier to get around and easier to live here, and I’m excited that YIMBY is down to geek out on zoning amendments with me.

Check out the rest of the YIMBY endorsements and candidate survey answers for the September 16th primary (less than a month away!!), go to:

If you EVER feel like you're garbage, you have absolutely nothing on some #housing traps for #homeless in #losangeles.

A #mentalhealth facility sent me to a place that lied to them, and said new residents didn't have to pay for the first couple months until they found a job or grant. I got there and with NOWHERE else to go for a couple weeks, was told I had to pay my #foodstamps and my entire #disability or I was #homeless.

Then my case manager was assigned and saved me.

United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs #UN #OCHA periodical update on #Gaza:

  • At least 61,722 Palestinians #killed by now, including¹ at least 18,430 #children (of which 931 younger than 1 year; 356 killed immediately after birth), and 9,735 #women.

  • 1,580 health workers killed².

  • After a complete halt of entry of all humanitarian supplies into Gaza, Israel has permitted "basic" imports starting May 18th 2025. The amount and the mode of distribution of the permitted imports are still utterly insufficient, with killings reported at militarized aid distribution points.

  • It is expected that between May and the end of September 2025, the entire population of Gaza will face crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity (IPC 3 and above), including over a million people (54 per cent) in the emergency phase (IPC Phase 4) and 470,000 people (22 per cent) facing catastrophic levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 5).

  • 1.875 million people in need of emergency shelters.³

  • About 92% of all #housing units either destroyed (160,000) or damaged (276,000)

  • Israel has declared 86.3% of Gaza as restricted military areas, or issued "evacuation" (displacement) orders for them.

You could have lived in an old flour mill. These aren't selling like hotcakes.

"The sale — which took more than a year and at a significant loss to the sellers — offers a glimpse into the high-stakes and often challenging conditions for those selling multimillion-dollar homes in the Twin Cities. While the luxury market has posted some of the biggest sales gains of the year, finding buyers for one-of-a-kind homes and the most expensive condos can be tricky. There’s a limited number of people who can afford them, and that segment of the market is flush with listings.

"This condo is on the seventh floor of the Whitney Lofts, a brick and timber mill building built in 1879 that helped make Minneapolis the flour capital of the world."

Today in Labor History August 14, 1850: A squatters' riots occurred in Sacramento, California. At the time, Sacramento was an unincorporated territory, seized from Mexico as a spoil of the Mexican-American War. Many people had moved to the region for the gold rush, resulting in land speculation and skyrocketing rents. The squatters challenged the right of John Sutter's Mexican-era claim to the Sacramento Valley and vowed to defend their claims by force. They created their own militia, consisting of dozens of men. The property owners called in the regional militia, with over 500 men. 2 squatters and 3 militiamen died in the battles, as well as 2 bystanders.
