Crissy presents Canada Day Long Weekend, 1 of 2: As #Canadians celebrate the #LongWeekend, it's the perfect time to remember the people and principles behind our #LabourDay. What many don't know is that this holiday's roots can be traced right here to Canada, and the struggle for a fair day's work.

The first Labour Day parade wasn't a celebration of summer's end: it was a march for justice. It all started with the "Nine Hour Movement" in Toronto. In 1872, printers went on strike for a shorter workweek, when a 12-hour workday was the norm.

When police arrested the union leaders, public outcry was so strong that then-Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald passed the Trade Union Act, legalizing unions in Canada. An American labour leader, inspired by the Toronto parades, took the idea back to the U.S., and soon the movement for a workers' holiday spread across North America.

So, why do we keep celebrating?

The ‘May Two-Four’ Weekend

Victoria Day is often called the ‘May Two-Four’ weekend—a nod to the date (May 24) and to a 24-pack of beer. Unofficially, it marks the start of summer in Canada: cottages open, gardens are planted, and fireworks cap off the holiday. While rooted in royal tradition, the long weekend has taken on a distinctly seasonal role. 🇨🇦 #Canada #MayTwoFour #VictoriaDay #CanadianCulture #LongWeekend
