"It appears likely that before the end of this year, a newly appointed GOP-led Federal Communications Commission will approve a measure of deregulation of broadcast ownership. The biggest media companies will grow bigger, and you could see investors who have no current interest in broadcasting enter the business. I want to suggest some language that should go into the prospectus for such a company’s stock offerings.

It would be a warning to investors that they are about to buy shares in a company that will try its best to make money, but that there will be times when something bigger will take precedence.

(I am sure there is, tucked away in the Securities and Exchange Commission regulations, language that would keep any company from saying what I am about to suggest. But for a moment, indulge me as I offer a layman’s version of what I want a company that is in the business of producing journalism to say to potential investors.)

Maybe they could try something like this:"

#Haaretz is adding that #IDF arrested this morning (Monday) the chief editor of the Palestinian news agency Ma'an. Al-Laham is also the manager of the West Bank offices of the Lebanese channel Al-Mayadeen, which is affiliated with Hezbollah. According to Maan, last night IDF forces arrested him at his home in the village of al-Doha in the Bethlehem area, and during the arrest the forces caused destruction in his house. It was also reported that al-Laham is expected to be brought to the Ofer court this coming Thursday for a hearing on extending his detention. The IDF has not yet provided a response on the matter.

#Israel / The state has informed the Supreme Court that it will continue to ban foreign and Israeli journalists from entering Gaza to report freely on the situation

This ban has been in place since October 2023, with multiple legal challenges filed by the Foreign Press Association (#FPA). While some limited access with military escort has been granted, Israel maintains that free movement for journalists poses unacceptable security risks.

The FPA has stated journalists will bear responsibility for any harm they face in Gaza, but Israel disputes this, fearing potential legal challenges and risks to operational security.

A court hearing on the FPA's petition is now scheduled for October 23rd, over a year after the initial request.

[...] The FPA's petition, filed approximately ten months ago, was originally scheduled for a hearing last April. However, the hearing was postponed due to "court calendar constraints." Subsequent hearings planned for May and June were also canceled, in part due to Israel's attack on #Iran.

What are the chances that this is connected to #Israel’s ongoing genocide in #Gaza?

An #Australian Federal Court ruled that journalist Antoinette Lattouf was unlawfully dismissed by the #ABC after sharing a Human Rights Watch post about Israeli war crimes in #Gaza. The court awarded her A$70,000 in damages and rejected ABC’s policy breach claims, finding executives acted in “panic” without proper process. ABC apologized, acknowledging the handling raised concerns about the broadcaster’s independence.

"A Spanish-language journalist remains in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody after being arrested while covering a protest in metro Atlanta earlier this month.

Mario Guevara was livestreaming a protest in DeKalb County on June 14 when police arrested him, despite video showing him wearing a press vest and identifying himself as a journalist.

Guevara, an Emmy-award winning journalist who covers immigration on his MGnews Facebook page and other social media platforms, now faces misdemeanor charges linked to the protest, as well as additional traffic warrants issued by Gwinnett County.

ICE issued a detainer after Guevara's arrest and transferred him to the Folkston ICE Processing Center, where he remains in custody.

On Friday, the Committee to Protect Journalists, along with the Atlanta Press Club and a group of local and national press sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security expressing alarm over Guevara’s detention.

“If Guevara’s case proceeds, it would represent a grim erosion of both freedom of the press and the rule of law,” the letter stated.

Guevara’s lawyer says they are preparing to request a bond hearing in hopes of securing his release.

GPB has reached out to ICE for additional details on Guevara's case. GPB's Peter Biello spoke to Mike Jordan, chair of the Atlanta Press Club's board of directors, on the situation."

Quoting Noa Limona on how the Israeli media is reckoning with uncritically accepting military explanations for targeting journalists and media infrastructure, after using the same justifications in both Gaza and Iran attacks that are now being used at home against them:

[…] After all, the killing of journalists in Gaza is covered here only through the #IDF filter, according to which they are all terrorists.

[…] and the bombing of the Iranian broadcasting network was reported with cheers and corrupt mockery. No journalist in the mainstream media questioned the army’s justifications for the bombing: the station ‘served military activity,’ the wonder excuse that worked for us in Gaza, and served as ‘a mouthpiece of the regime that incites genocide.’ It seems that no one in Israeli studios felt the crushing irony.”

Limona’s concludes that the assault on press freedom that began with targeting foreign journalists is expanding to encompass Israeli media outlets that don’t toe the government line. She warns that even mainstream Israeli channels (11, 12, 13) are now being labeled as problematic by government supporters, suggesting that the restrictions will eventually affect all non-compliant media.

Israeli police instructed to prevent media documentation at missile strike sites at their discretion, including arresting journalists

Israeli police have been given new guidelines allowing any officer to act against journalists and media crews documenting missile strike sites based on their individual judgment. The instructions specifically target foreign media not bound by Israeli censorship, permitting police to demand identification, remove journalists from scenes, and detain them for investigation on charges of revealing classified information or violating censorship orders.

These extraordinary powers were granted following demands by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi to require foreign journalists to obtain written pre-approval from military censors before documenting strike sites.

The Attorney General has temporarily blocked this move. The new police guidelines go beyond existing military censor instructions and allow detention on charges carrying penalties of life imprisonment or 15 years in prison.

Foreign journalists, particularly Arabic media outlets, have reported hostile treatment by police at various strike sites, with discrimination evident as Israeli journalists were granted access while foreign reporters were initially barred.

@Geri It's disgusting but we should be aware that journalists who are allowed to stand beside an Israeli hospital during bombing, are choosen by the military (censors) and protected by the IDF. They can't report under #pressfreedom criteria ... Otherwise, they would not get access at all.

As a journalist, I don't believe what these colleagues say live. More important is, whether colleagues give more critical tones during post-production in the studio.

"Public-interest journalism speaks truth to power, so protecting press freedom is part of protecting democracy. But what does it take to digitally secure journalists’ work in an environment where critics, hackers, oppressive regimes, and others seem to have the free press in their crosshairs?

That’s what Harlo Holmes focuses on as Freedom of the Press Foundation’s digital security director. Her team provides training, consulting, security audits, and other support to newsrooms, independent journalists, freelancers, documentary filmmakers – anyone who is making independent journalism in the public interest – so that they can do their jobs more safely and securely. Holmes joins EFF’s Cindy Cohn and Jason Kelley to discuss the tools and techniques that help journalists protect themselves and their sources while keeping the world informed.

In this episode you’ll learn about:

- The importance of protecting online anonymity on an ever-increasingly “data-greedy” internet
- How digital security nihilism in the United States compares with regions of the world where oppressive and repressive governance are more common
- Why compartmentalization can be a simple, easy approach to digital security
- The need for middleware to provide encryption and other protections that shield sources’ anonymity and journalists’ work product when using corporate data platforms
- How podcasters, YouTubers, and TikTokers fit into the broad sweep of media history, and need digital protections as well

H. Holmes is the chief information security officer and director of digital security at Freedom of the Press Foundation. She strives to help individual journalists in various media organizations become confident and effective in securing their communications within their newsrooms, with their sources, and with the public at large. She is a media scholar, software programmer, and activist."

"First off, “be available everywhere.” In the past, whistleblowers have been burned because their web histories pointed directly to when and where they reached out to their journalist. So, use the commons of the internet to give people the information they need to securely establish first contact. If you’re running a tipline advertisement on your own website, use an encrypted and safe URL that will not indicate that the public has visited your explicit whistleblowing instructions.

Third-party services like Google are not your friend for the most sensitive of data. Google can definitely be subpoenaed for all the juicy whistleblower details. Find an alternative. Make your submission portals available over Tor, too! Visiting an onion address can make a huge difference.

Lastly, encrypt all the things. This means data in transit as well as at rest. If you are going to plop the next Panama Papers on your hard drive, encrypt that computer like your life depends on it."
