Though familiar features of our skies, #clouds are surprisingly elusive. Last night, in a highly anticipated public lecture at Feldstraßenbunker in #Hamburg, our director Bjorn Stevens set out to explore and address some of the fundamental questions driving scientific research on clouds. Participating (and actually contributing a little) to the 'Ethical Research Practices' day at #UHH. I will be talking about how to cheat using ChatGPT

Cloud feedbacks remain the largest contributor of uncertainty to climate sensitivity, &tropical high clouds are most uncertain. Combining cloud-resolving simulations with #ICON & the radiative transfer model ARTS, our #IMPRS candidate Jakob Deutloff developed a conceptual model that links the high-cloud radiative effect to cloud thickness measured by ice water path. It reveals that high clouds are slightly warming the Earth, even more so for increasing amounts of low #clouds.

Today, Hartmut Graßl, former director at #MPIM and professor at the University of Hamburg (#UHH), is celebrating his 85th birthday. Today, we celebrated the brilliant scientists who completed the #IMPRS-ESM program during the last year. Deputy Head of the IMPRS Johanna Baehr (#UHH) addressed the graduates during a small ceremony and handed them their transcript of records. As #MPIM, we're honored to have been a part of their journey and we can't wait to see the amazing things they'll accomplish next.

A potential weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation #AMOC could have devastating impacts. But what do we really know for certain? Today, we’re thrilled to have the renowned climate expert Mojib Latif (@geomar_de) at our #KlimaCampus colloquium to break down the latest facts. The room is packed to the brim — good thing we have flexible walls! Many of us have a special connection to Latif, as he worked alongside Klaus Hasselmann at our institute from 1983 to 2002. #UHH

Researchers from Hamburg have explored how #ocean processes during the last ice age affected ocean #carbon storage. Using an Earth System Model, B. Liu, J. Maerz,& @TatianaIlyina found that simulating a shallower & weaker glacial #AMOC than today is crucial to reproducing proxy data from marine sediments. Another factor they identified is marine snow, a shower of biological debris from the upper ocean to the depth, and its sinking speeds.

Full house at the #KlimaCampus Colloquium here in #Hamburg: #IMPRS committee member Moritz Drupp (#UHH) talks about the economics behind #climate policy – first about how a new paper updates our understanding about the costs of climate inaction , and then about how the German #Umweltsteuer (ecotax) helped in reducing emissions of both #CO2 and local air pollutants.
In April, Moritz will take on a new position at ETH Zürich - a warm farewell from Hamburg!
