#Grapes are difficult to grow initially. But once they have established, they are very drought tolerant because of their extensive root systems. No tilling, no pruning, no fertilizer, no chemicals,.. They need an arbor or a tree to climb and to spread. The commercial way of growing grapes relies on pruning and chemicals reduces the lifespan of grapes. Grape vines provide shades for other vegetables, such as lettuce and peas, to grow better in early summer.

Impressions of my first time driving along Italy's east coast: delightful scenery that included a diverse range of fruit crops: olives (lots and lots of olive trees!), nectarines, apples, kiwifruit, table grapes (on T-trellises), wine grapes (on high VSP, GDC, single wire high cordon...) and other things I couldn't identify because I was driving.

Refreshing to see polyculture!

In somewhat related news, I decided to get some bottles ready for the eventual vinegar.

I found some nice bottles in the cupboard like these (pic) which I think will do the trick.

But the labels, sigh. One brand was good, the label came right off after a brief soak. Another brand - I will be scrubbing for a month of Sundays to get that sucker off.

Why do they make it so hard????

Ditto jars. I collected a couple of dozen jars from friends when I began #fermenting. Now I have 5 years worth of scrubbing to remove labels. I am not sure it is worth it.

Things have definitely quietened down in the grape vinegar fermentation department. Previously, altho the bubbling was easing, once it was stirred there would be a renewed oxygenated effort. But today, very little fermentation.

As I understand it, this is as it should be, and we are heading towards straining time.

It's about at this point in the video I am using (in conjunction with a couple of articles, but the video is a good guide),

A Bunch Of Grapes

There is certainly a joy living near one of the most famous wine growing areas in the world. A trip to the vineyards is certainly one of them.
There are a number of wineries where my wife and feel like home at. I have got to know a number of wine makers over the years and have been given the opportunity to photograph a few vineyards unfettered.
