Happy Weekend!
A really sweet, restoring faith in good people, good neighbors here.

I am so fortunate to have such thoughtful neighbors who set out a toilet for all walkers/runners to use if they find themselves far from home and the need arises.

Am I a good neighbor? What does what mean?
I'm more of a neutral these days . . . we have very few neighbors here, & 2 of them have tried to start something.
One reported us (to the county!) for not mowing--combo of working out of town & a broken mower. But who does that?
Other was a weird letter?!? complaining trees on our property would damage their house . . . just bizarre.
New neighbors are the best, tho! With cute dogs. Working on friendship.
When I give presentations on mosquito control I always urge attendees to push Mosquito Dunks on friends and family who might not know about Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis). E.g., as housewarming gifts, party favors, stocking stuffers, raffle prizes. But I never have the perfect image to show. So this morning I spent 30 minutes making a mock-up of the image that I wish existed in real life. I know, it's terrible. Maybe some photogenic family can recreate for me in real life? #MosquitoDunks #mosquitoes #bti #insects #gifts #bacteria #neighbors #biocontrol

Nice little bit of serendipity today. I was watching reels on Instagram (I know, I know) and a new friend I met at a recent convention posted about finding a journal that she had as a kid, that she’s been looking for for 20 years - she had two of them, she loved it so much she went back after she filled the first one to buy a second one, but hasn’t seen them in 20+ years and finally found one online and bought it and was getting all emotional about finding this thing from childhood.
Reader, I had this exact same journal in my house, completely unused, for the last ?30? years. It was in a box at the top of the stairs to give away, but we hadn’t gotten to Goodwill yet, and I dug it out and messaged her and she lives around the corner and came over and I gave it to her and there were Feelings and it was awesome.
(Sidebar: there are two kinds of notebook people, and the first kind finds a beautiful notebook and writes their beautiful thoughts in it and the second kind thinks it’s much too beautiful to put their thoughts inside it, because their thoughts cannot possibly be good enough for this notebook. Guess which one I am.)
Sometimes the internet is kinda ok?
I know a lot of people hate on the Nextdoor app, but at least here, the neighbors are really mostly great.
Right now everyone is posting pictures of their flowers and yards, a lady showed a video of a bear sniffing around in her driveway, a couple of puppies were found and corralled, and someone's saying they'll do yardwork if anyone needs it.
Kinda makes me extra happy in these absurd times.
There are those for whom, on a warm Saturday morning in May, the song of Robin and coo of Mourning Dove are not enough. For whom the whisper of Wind in the leaves and buzz of passing Bee are insufficient accompaniment. For whom Nature's choir must be augmented by Journey's Don't Stop Believin'.
Such are my neighbors 3 doors down. Could be worse.
So today, a group of elementary school children paraded through my neighborhood. I knew they were there because they were quite loud and energetic, and honestly I was very confused about what was happening. I mean, what on earth kind of field trip are they doing, wandering around from house to house?
I tried to see what they were up to, and I couldn’t really tell.
But after they’d passed, my husband opened the door to our back porch because it was a lovely day and the sun was out. And hanging on the doorknob was a handcrafted paper plate basket of paper flowers.
And it struck me—they were celebrating May Day.
And I got a surge of nostalgia. Growing up in the midwest of the US, my family celebrated the first of May as a sort of polar opposite to Halloween. We’d make paper cups and fill them with flowers and candy, deliver them secretly to the neighbors we loved, and run away quickly before they discovered them. No notes. No indication of where they came from or whom they came from.
And here, in Eureka, CA, 40 years later, was an entire elementary school class doing it as an organized activity.
I took that paper basket, and I put it on a hook on my refrigerator, to remind me of a different kind of sustenance than food.
Caring for others with no expectations.
I really really hope that elementary school class teacher knows how much they touched me. Because they restored a bit of my faith in humanity today.
