I used to miss #MySpace until I found Mastodon. Almost no #enshittification (except perhaps some really bad profile themes that would wreck your shitty Dell of the era 😆). No AI, no obscure algorithms (compared to today's corporate social media anyway).

Wordpress' editor is just total garbage, I've decided. Fiddly, obtuse and annoying.

I'm now looking at building a blog in
11ty and throwing it up on Neocities. 11ty's built around the fabulous Markdown, meaning it's the perfect use-case for my beloved Obsidian.

Neocities, eh? Maybe for kicks I'll search on
Lycos for some cool Myspace pages and fire up Winamp for that authentic llama-whipping late-90's-internet feel.

My wife found a #MySpace China t-shirt from when I worked at MySpace and we launched in China.

I don't remember what it says on the back, so please reply if you know 🙏🏻

This is what lens scans:
反你友我

Which they translate as:
Anti-You Friends Me

LOL 😂

You know, when things like #myspace and #facebook started popping up, I was smart enough at about 13 years old to think "Hey, I bet you this is gonna get used to manipulate people politically in my lifetime," and usually got ignored by folks older than me as some kind of kid-like conspiracy.

Nobody took the idea seriously until it happened.

It's likely the most dangerous #tech that exists in the world. Maybe more so than nukes.

I was smarter at 13 than most Americans.

Lifehacker: This Site Gives Your Bluesky Profile a MySpace Makeover. “Do you remember a time when the internet was a more chaotically personal place? When the experience of using social media wasn’t so uniform? SkySpace seeks to recapture those days. The site transforms your Bluesky profile into a Myspace-esque page, complete with backgrounds, music, and a section for your top eight friends.”

"#MySpace pages, Media player skins, the eye searingly gaudy hot dog stand theme. These all were vectors for #selfexpression. But to offer these #freedoms, you have to trust the person operating your system, honour their agency, and respect them as a serious intellectual partner instead of a gibbering idiot to be manipulated for your own ends.
…personal computing needs to make a firm return to normative #design practises.

I've got @cyd churning away, backing up my Twitter archive starting from day 1, back in 2009.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with the account yet, but it seems like a good idea to grab the archive.

Unfortunately, deleting (almost) everything, squatting the username, and moving on seems like the path forward.

The #fediverse isn't a wholesale replacement, but it feels the most home-shaped, for now. Despite the exodus of normies to #bluesky, that platform makes my capitalism radar ping, so idk.

Predictably, because I'm old, I'm feeling nostalgic for forums and, like, #MySpace or something I guess. Actually, tbqh I never had a myspace account, but the vibes from that era were solid. Hand-writing HTML, serving it from URLs with tildes in the path…

Webrings! Remember webrings? Ah, what a time to have been alive haha

Learning for the first time tonite about #Friendica - it originally sounded like a misremembering of #Friendster, the 2003 #SocialMedia precursor to #Myspace, which, as an #InternetElder, forms part of my long lived experience online. Having been so happy with my #Mastodon & now my #Bluesky experience, it's cool to see the #Fediverse also has an option for both (AND #Tumblr & #WordPress) to be supported within Friendica. I'm not scared of the install either, so this might be a fun option for me.
