I once responded to a writing prompt that asked me to describe a character's bedroom. I found that extremely helpful in figuring out who this character is.

The semicolon is becoming an endangered species in British literature; usage dropped 50% since 2000, from every 205 words to every 390. Meanwhile, half of young learners can't use them properly. Perhaps we need a punctuation conservation program?
I did another post about place names that can act as story jump off points for filling in World Building and history. This is a literal jump off point with a story behind it.
#WritersCoffeeClub 9: Have you ever done timed writing sprints? Did you enjoy it?
Yes. And no. I didn't enjoy it. I find if I just sit down and write, stuff gets done. If I force it, I'll have to throw most of it away anyway.
(Then there are the times inspiration strikes, and the words just pour out. Too bad I can never plan on those, or even count on 'em. But they are wonderful when they happen.)
Your place-names, even your street-names, will have a history. They can be a great leaping off point for your character to fill in some world-building with another character.
A #WritingTip: remember no story really exists before you start #writing it. Not even in your own head. You're not transcribing a preexisting, flawless #text. What you do #write may not "sound" like the images or notions you had in mind, but that's inevitable. That's #creating. Embrace it.
Why does your medieval fantasy land have a king? Can't you invent something better? Have you?
What is something that could only exist in your world? Not something big, just a little detail. Look around at little things in the world today, and see how they might translate.

Who is your hero's hero? The person your MC looks up to? This is an excellent tip for #WorldBuilding in #Fantasy and #SciFi, as it allows you to dip into your scenarios made-up history. (One of my personal heroes being pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart)
What's going to happen to your character when they die?

[CoF] B.1: The Forest & The Trees
Welcome back to the Craft of Fiction Series. Today’s the start of our new section on worldbuilding, called The Architect, and through each post we’ll be talking about the different components that can be a part of every fictional world. I stress that word “can” because every story, every writer, is different. (Before we continue, if you missed last week’s post introducing The Architect section, you can find it, like always, right here.) I think many of us can agree that what […]https://jtsterling12.wordpress.com/2025/04/23/cof-b-1-the-forest-the-trees/
How far would your character go to sample their favourite beverage?
