Today in Labor History July 4, 1840: The anti-rent association of Berne in the Hudson Valley issued its Declaration of Independence, starting the Anti-Rent War, which lasted until August 1845. Also known as the Helderberg War, the anti-rent war was a tenants' revolt in upstate New York against the patroons, who acted as feudal lords with the right to make laws. The first meeting of the Anti-Rent tenant farmers was held in Berne, New York on July 4, 1839. Leaders of the revolt were tried for riot, conspiracy and robbery in 1845. The first trial resulted in no convictions. A re-trial in September 1845 saw a fist-fight between the attorneys who were sentenced to solitary confinement for 24 hours. One defendant, Smith A. Boughton, was sentenced to life imprisonment, but was pardoned by the pro-Anti-Renter John Young.

@kuketzblog

😀

Today in Labor History June 30, 1839: The Amistad left the Havana harbor to deliver 53 enslaved African to a sugar plantation. Portuguese slave traders had illegally transported the Mende people from west Africa to Cuba, in violation of European treaties against the slave trade. On July 1, Joseph Cinque led a revolt. Armed with machete-like cane knives, they killed the captain and several crew members, but spared the two slave owners so they could direct the ship back to Africa. The crew tricked them and sailed up the Atlantic coast, presuming they would be intercepted by the U.S. Navy, which captured the ship near Montauk, Long Island. President Martin Van Buren wanted to send the prisoners back to Spanish authorities in Cuba to stand trial for mutiny. Abolitionists raised funds for the mutineers’ defense. Former President John Quincy Adams represented them in court. Adams was one of the few early U.S. presidents to not own slaves, to support the abolitionist movement, and to oppose the war with Mexico. In 1841, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the mutineers had been illegally enslaved and had rebelled in self-defense and ordered them freed.

Hello fediverse,
I began to code an #Discord x #Revolt Bot on @Codeberg and appreciate your support. If you have a little knowledge of coding and know what Typescript is, don't hesitate to make some PRs on my repo. You can look at the Projects Roadmap and issues, and what is planned to be implemented.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to write me a DM or contact me on Revolt (Username is declared in the Readme.md). ;-)

I don't get why #Zulip is not used more often in "forums", for support work and for general community building. IMO, it's got modern UI and it's purpose-built to organize communities and help with asynchronous communication that can be searched later. Plus, it's entirely free and open source software and there are both self hosting and paid hosting options.

No other solution I know comes close, especially not the ones that focus on #VoiceChat or try to mimic #Discord, e.g. #Revolt.

Today in Labor History May 31, 1838: Kentish peasants clashed with British troops in the Battle of Bosendon Wood. Sir William Courtenay led the uprising. Courtenay had previously run for public office and spent time in a lunatic asylum. He built up a large local following in the previous four years with his millenarian preaching and demonstrations against the New Poor Law of 1834. On May 29, 1838, he led a march through town, with a loaf of bread on a pole (a local symbol of protest). They continued protesting for the next two days, alarming the town’s wealthy elites. When the authorities tried to arrest Courtenay, he shot and killed a constable. The authorities quickly mustered a small army. Courtenay had a gun and a sword, but his followers had only sticks. Courtenay managed to kill a Lieutenant in the ensuing battle, but was promptly killed by other soldiers, who also killed eight of his followers.

Today in Labor History May 30, 1381: Tax collector John Bampton sparked the Peasants’ Revolt in Brentwood, Essex. The mass uprising, also known as Wat Tyler’s Rebellion, or the Great Rising, began because of attempts to collect a poll tax. However, tensions were already high because of the economic misery and hunger caused by the Black Death pandemic of the 1340s, and the Hundred Years’ War. During the uprising, rebels burned public records and freed prisoners. King Richard II, 14 years old, hid in the Tower of London. Rebels entered the Tower and killed the Lord Chancellor and the Lord High Treasurer, but not the king. It took nearly six months for the authorities to suppress the Peasants’ Revolt. They slaughtered over 1,400 rebels. Roughly 600 years later, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher tried again to impose a poll tax on Britain’s working class. It also sparked a revolt which brought an end both to the tax and Thatcher’s regime. Billy Bragg references Thatcher’s poll tax in his song, All You Fascists.

Today in Labor History May 3, 1968: The first battles of the May Upheaval began in the Latin Quarter of Paris. The police arrested 500 students meeting at the University of Sorbonne to protest repression at Nanterre. Revolt broke out along the route taken by police vans, with thousands fighting against the police. Throughout the month of May and part of June, workers and students occupied schools, factories and offices. By mid-May, 10 million workers were on strike.

Hey folks! You probably heard that Discord is speeding up toward enshittification (if not, long story short: public company soon), and maybe you've been wanting out. (You probably *should* at least create a plan B asap even if you go on using Discord as your "main base", just to be safe.)

We did a bit of research with a friend and tested the two most popular alternatives (Matrix/Element and Revolt), here's the write-up of our tests and opinions: legaosaure-stuff.neocities.org

We did our best to keep it focused on what a not especially techie Discord user would feel useful, and we hope it can help people feel more at ease with at least one option! Feel free to share around =)

(Also feel free to reach out if you find typos, broken links, or outright mistakes. We did our best but it's more than one paragraph of writing so there's probably something ^^)
