noticed cmake has a unity build toggle
tried it just for fun, engine is ~36kloc
- stock scratch build is ~770ms
- unity is 650ms.
certainly faster, though at this scale its not super critical. order of magnitude wins are unlikely with how far I've driven it down (the next frontier would be a custom language imo).
that said, unity builds break some hacky tricks I do to make logging more convenient, so I won't be using it given the marginal gains.

Night prototype version 1. This drone doesn't want to be cleaning, it wants to make tracks or it's a smart AI and likes to draw. Next I'll change the approach and do an inversion, what it draws - it will be opacity for material and for example on a decal

This spring, at the ripe age of 33, I started drawing. One of my primary goals was to create graphics for my little games. At this point, after about 200 hours of practice, I think I am pretty close to being able to draw anything I want. Especially in the context of retro game dev and pixel art.

In this log, I want to talk about two major topics: the progress I've made since the note and the importance of intention in character design. Incidentally, I will share my thoughts on why GenAI art will always be mediocre at best.

This week I updated the combat UI.
- To better plan your turns, you'll always see all of your actions.
- Made turn phases and changes more obvious.
- Text for both actions taken during a turn show at the bottom (vs just the last action taken).
The tree leaves are now swaying in the wind. The "Grasslands - Stylized Nature" pack the trees are from actually already included a wind effect, but I implemented some simple tweaks to make it more to my liking. What do you think?
